Intel's Core i7-2630QM chip has made the leap from the company's roadmap onto its first spec sheet, courtesy of HP's dv7. We've come across a provisional component list for an update to HP's gaming laptop, which includes the 2GHz quad-core CPU as the star of its show. Now, of course, neither HP nor Intel has said anything official on the matter, but Laptoping has also been snooping around and found listings at online retailers for laptops from Gateway and Lenovo also offering the still unannounced part. Symbian Foundation axing websites on December 17th, source repositories available 'upon request'
We'd heard that the Symbian Foundation would undergo some drastic changes as it transitions to a licensing body, and here's number one -- every official Symbian website will be shuttered on the 17th of next month. That goes for every page from symbian.org down to the Symbian Twitter and Facebook feeds, and the source code itself will be shelved. If you want access to any of it, even the databases of user-generated bug reports, you'll have to ask the Foundation for a hard copy and pay a nominal media and shipping fee after January 31st. The Advent Vega seems to be gaining some serious traction overseas, but despite the low price, not having access to Google's bona fide Android Market is a huge Debbie Downer. Well, it was. Chrysler confirms $843M investment in Kokomo, IN plants

Sergio Marchionne stopped by Chrysler's transmission manufacturing facilities in Kokomo, Indiana and delivered some good news. The Chrysler Group plans to invest $843 million into the plants to modernize them and prepare for the production of a new front-wheel drive automatic transmission. This pushes the automakers total investment dollars near the $3 billion mark, dating back to June of 2009, with $1.1 billion of that earmarked specifically for the Kokomo facilities. More importantly, this announcement should have 2,250 employees breathing a little easier because it allows their jobs to be retained.
We know Chrysler is getting ready to launch its eight-speed transmission, but this new transmission in development has yet to be revealed.
"For years, Kokomo has been at the center of our powertrain strategy and the potential of an additional investment reaffirms that position," said Sergio Marchionne, CEO, Chrysler Group LLC. "When introduced, this new front-wheel drive transmission, along with the previously announced eight-speed transmission we will also produce in Kokomo, will transform our future products and position them as leaders in marketplace. With the promise of investing more than $1 billion into our Kokomo facilities within the last six months, we are demonstrating our commitment to this community and our dedicated workforce. We appreciate the support of the UAW and the City of Kokomo, and look forward to continuing a partnership that will see the Chrysler Group once again become a successful and competitive enterprise."
New transmissions, more stable jobs and a new Charger? 2011 is certainly shaping up to be brighter than last year for the Pentastar.

GM to invest $163 million in three plants
Filed under: Etc., Plants/Manufacturing, GM, Earnings/FinancialsGeneral Motors is investing $163.2 million three plants as it prepares to ramp up engine production for the Chevrolet Volt, Cruze and a new small Chevrolet. The company's Flint Engine Operations will take home the lion's share of the money, with $138.3 million going to help boost production of the Ecotec turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine used in each of the company's fuel-thrifty cars. Meanwhile, The General's Bay City Components plant will receive $12.7 million and Defiance Castings in Defiance, Ohio will see $12.2 million. All told, GM says that the money will protect 184 jobs across the three manufacturing sites.
At the beginning of 2011, the Flint plant will be responsible for producing around 400 engines per day, though GM wants to increase that number to 800 by the end of next year. The Bay City plant is set to increase production of both connecting rods and cam shafts while the Defiance facility will increase its output of crank shafts and engine blocks. Nendo's ceramic circuit board speaker gives the rest of the audio world body image issues
We've seen slick hand-crafted ceramic speakers in the past, but this one millimeter-thick collaboration between potter Mitsuke Masagasu and design firm Nendo is in a different league. An entirely different league. The set is result of the so-called Revalue Nippon Project, created by Japanese footballer Nakata Hidetoshi to revive traditional Japanese art forms. Nakata selected five curators -- in this case the director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazaw -- who were then tasked with pairing a ceramicist and designer to collaborate on a one of a kind form. Not satisfied with simply being 31 times thinner than the emaciated Mythos XTR series as a sole basis for artistic impact, the speaker's ravishing circuit design is also made without a human touch. Instead, a computer-controlled process cuts thin slices from a ceramic substrate slab, fixes them with mercury vapor, and then mounts them via a robotic arm. Amazingly, sound quality is still also touted as being top notch. There are no plans however for these speakers to ever be mass produced, so if you were hoping to snag one as the ultimate accessory for your über-modern flat... well, let yourself down easy, alright champ? DLNA certification, you're quite the talker. Following in the famed traditions of FCC and Bluetooth SIG leaks, it now looks like we've got a bit of information on the Samsung Stealth V. In addition to DLNA over 802.11b/g/n (of course), the 4.3-inch AMOLED with WVGA resolution sports Android 2.2 and an 8 megapixel camera. Sound familiar? Swap Froyo with Gingerbread and all these pieces line up pretty well with the mysterious flagship phone we discovered two weeks ago. And that leads us to speculation based on naming conventions: this entry bears the SCH-i510 model number, which is just ten up on the Fascinate, Verizon's Galaxy S variant. Flagship sequel? That'd sound about right then, as would a CDMA chipset inside. Few more certifications and we should have a much better feel for the future of this one.

Here it is, treehuggers and haters. The EPA's rating of the Chevy Volt: 93 when on electric, 37 combined city/hwy on gasoline, which works out to a 60 MPG composite . Those combine to give the Volt an average range of 379 miles, although, just like with the Leaf, the total range for EV-only topped off slightly less than what the manufacturer advertises. Those keeping score will also note that the Leaf was rated at 99MPGe earlier this week with a total yearly cost of ownership at $561. �So yeah, let the arguing�continue.

A new federal investigation is focusing on the legality of supply line leaks and their consequences on Wall Street. The poster boy for this would have to be Apple, around which an entire manufacturing and distribution channels has grown, and which is now too big to plug every leak — especially now that memetically propagating news magnifies every murmur into a clamor, for better or for worse.
The subjects of the probe are some research firms that make it their business to know what's going on in, say, Shenzhen or Taiwan, where friends and industry experts dispense information that may or may not be confidential about such things as big new orders, equipment changes, and meetings with other companies. The feds say that at some point, these things must constitute insider trading. I say good luck drawing that particular line.

Samsung Stealth V outed with DLNA certification: 4.3-inch screen, Android 2.2?
DLNA certification, you're quite the talker. Following in the famed traditions of FCC and Bluetooth SIG leaks, it now looks like we've got a bit of information on the Samsung Stealth V. In addition to DLNA over 802.11b/g/n (of course), the 4.3-inch AMOLED with WVGA resolution sports Android 2.2 and an 8 megapixel camera. Sound familiar? Swap Froyo with Gingerbread and all these pieces line up pretty well with the mysterious flagship phone we discovered two weeks ago. And that leads us to speculation based on naming conventions: this entry bears the SCH-i510 model number, which is just ten up on the Fascinate, Verizon's Galaxy S variant. Flagship sequel? That'd sound about right then, as would a CDMA chipset inside. Few more certifications and we should have a much better feel for the future of this one.

Former Ford employee pleads guilty to stealing $50M in trade secrets
Filed under: Government/Legal, FordAccording to the Department of Justice, 49 year-old Mike Yu has pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of trade secrets. Yu worked as a product engineer for Ford for 10 years before accepting a job with another company, but when he left the Blue Oval, he took more than his family photos with him when he walked out the door. The engineer copied over 4,000 Ford documents onto an external hard drive before letting the company know of his new employer. Those documents included proprietary information on everything from engine and transmission mounting designs to electrical systems and full body shells. Yu began working for Beijing Automotive Company in 2008.
Yu returned to the United States in November of that same year, and was arrested upon his arrival. The Federal Bureau of Investigation found a Beijing Automotive Company laptop among Yu's possessions at that time with 41 Ford design specification documents on its hard drive. Yu had apparently accessed those documents while working for the company.
Under his plea agreement, Yu faces up to six and a half years in prison and a $150,000 fine in addition to an agreed loss amount of between $50 million and $100 million. The former engineer will be deported after his prison time is up. Follow the jump to read the official government statement.
